The Texas High School Coaches Association released its preseason football regional rankings this week, and the Brownwood Lions will start the year at No. 10 in Class 4A Division I Region II.

Though ranked in the Top 10, the Lions — who are making the move east from Region I this season — are fourth amongst teams in District 5-4A Division I.

Argyle (12-1) leads the way at No. 1, receiving all four first-place votes, followed by No. 2 Kennedale (14-2) and No. 3 Melissa (12-2).

Next is a trio of Brownwood’s district rivals — Stephenville (12-3) and Waco LaVega (14-1) tied at No. 4, then China Spring (9-4) at No. 6.

Celina (9-4) comes in at No. 7 followed Dallas Carter (9-3) at No. 8, Paris (7-4) at No. 9 and Brownwood (6-5) in the 10th spot.

In other local rankings, Comanche (12-2) debuts at No. 4 in Class 3A Division II Region II, trailing only Gunter (15-1), Lexington (13-1) and Holliday (11-2).

Goldthwaite (4-7) is No. 9 in Class 2A Division I Region II behind No. 1 De Leon (12-1), No. 2 Crawford (11-3) — both in the same district with the Eagles — No. 3 Valley View (10-2), No. 4 Bosqueville (7-6), No. 5 Bogata Rivercrest (12-1), No. 6 Hico (7-4) — also a district rival of Goldthwaite’s — No. 7 Celeste (10-2) and No. 8 Collinsville (7-5).

The Lions will kick off their first season under head coach Sammy Burnett at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31 at Gordon Wood Stadium against Class 3A Division I preseason No. 1 Brock. The game will be televised live on Fox Sports Southwest.

Meanwhile, Comanche visits Eastland in its Aug. 31 opener, while Goldthwaite ventures to Winters.
