SHERMAN — The Howard Payne Lady Jackets picked up their first volleyball victory of the season in the last of their four matches at the Austin College Invitation over the weekend.

In Saturday’s finale against Paul Quinn, the Lady Jackets chalked up a five-set win, 25-13, 18-25, 25-16, 21-25, 15-11.

Zhartaezia Bradley and Kailey Doering sparked the Howard Payne offense with 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Kylie Metcalf and Mya Ross both chipped in eight kills followed by Madeleine Kelly with four, McKenna Walker and Ashley Hessler with three apiece and Alexi Bushong with one.

Walker distributed 22 assists, Madeline Lopez dished out 20, Jada Terry added four, Christian Wilson finished with three, Doering tallied two and Ross and Kelly each were credited with one.

Behind the service line, Ross recorded four aces while Lopez, Bradley and Wilson each served a pair and Kylee Shirley contributed one.

Defensively, Wilson’s 27 digs were a team-best trailed by Ross with 19, Lopez and Shirley with nine each, Walker with eight, Doering with four, Bradley with two and Terry, Kelly, Metcalf and Hessler with one piece.

At the net, Metcalf finished with two blocks, Doering and Bushong added one each and Hessler, Bradley and Ross were in on assisted blocks.

Howard Payne began tournament action Friday with a pair of straight-set losses to American Southwest Conference foes.

First, the Lady Jackets were downed by LeTourneau, 25-19, 25-17, 25-20.

Ross led the way with nine kills followed by Metcalf with five, Doering with four, Bradley with three, Kelly with two and Walker, Lopez and Hessler with one apiece.

Walker dished out 12 assists and served the lone ace while Lopez added eight assists and Ross and Wilson were credited with one assist apiece.

Wilson collected 10 digs trailed by Lopez with eight, Walker with seven, Ross with six, Shirley with five, Metcalf with three, Doering and Kelly with two each and Bushong with one.

Bradley finished with three blocks, Metcalf had 1.5, Kelly notched one and Walker was credited with a half.

Later Friday, HPU suffered a 25-15, 25-17, 25-19 defeat at the hands of East Texas Baptist.

Ross logged nine kills trailed by Doering with seven, Bradley with six, Metcalf and Hessler with two apiece and Shirley and Terry with one each.

Walker notched 24 assists with one each coming from Metcalf and Wilson. Two aces were served by Shirley, one each were provided by Ross, Bradley and Terry.

Shirley and Wilson finished with 10 digs each followed by Ross and Terry with five apiece, Walker and Metcalf both with four, Bradley with two and one each from Doering and Hessler.

Ross netted two blocks with 1.5 from Bradley and one from Doering.

In Saturday’s first match, Howard Payne fell to Linfield, 15-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-13.

Offensively, Bradley produced 11 kills trailed by Ross with eight, Metcalf six, Walker with five, Doering with three, and Kelly and Hessler with two apiece.

Walker dished out 17 assists with Lopez chipping in 15. Wilson added two and Bradley and Kelly chipped in one each.

Bradley, Ross, Shirley served HPU’s aces.

Defensively, Wilson logged 15 digs followed by Walker with 10, Ross with eight, Shirley with seven, Bradley with six, Lopez with five, Kelly with four, Doering with two and Hessler with one.

Bradley was in on six blocks, Kelly and Doering had a hand in two each and Walker, Ross and Metcalf recorded one apiece.

The Lady Jackets (1-4) open American Southwest Conference volleyball action at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Sul Ross. Howard Payne opens its home slate at 7 p.m. Friday as Hardin-Simmons visits in an ASC encounter.
