The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets opened American Southwest Conference soccer action with a 2-1 victory over the Ozarks Eagles Saturday afternoon at Citizens National Bank Field.
Down 1-0 just 65 seconds into the contest, the Yellow Jackets (2-2, 1-0) drew even with 28:08 left as Michael Westerman scored the initial goal. Then, with 22:40 left in regulation, Ricardo Pierce found the net with an assist from Collin Salyers for the game-winner.
Alex Ross put Ozarks (0-5-1, 0-2) on the board in the opening minutes of action.
Both teams took 17 shots with Ozarks putting four on goal compared to five by HPU — one each by Alejandro Molina, Reid Longabaugh, Joshua Rodriguez, Westerman and Pierce.
In goal, HPU’s Andrew Hackney tallied two saves with one goal allowed in 86 minutes, while Matt Prall notched a save in his four minutes of action.
The Yellow Jackets will attempt to remain undefeated in conference action when they visit Belhaven at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Lady Jackets 0, Ozarks 0
The Howard Payne Lady Jackets and Ozarks Lady Eagles played 110 minutes without a goal in an American Southwest Conference match that ended in a tie after double overtime.
Howard Payne attempted 20 shots with 12 on goal — three each by Jada Austin and Kaitlyn Harrison, two by Lauren Otts and one apiece by Mariah Gonzales, Megan Jakubisin, Kelsey Bunch and Brooke Gibbs.
Delaney Castor went the distance in goal for the Lady Jackets (0-4-1, 0-0-1) and recorded 15 saves, as Ozarks (2-2-2, 0-1-1) took 26 shots overall with 11 off target.
The Lady Jackets’ quest for their first win of the season, and in ASC action, continues at 5 p.m. Thursday at Belhaven.
