The Brownwood Freshman Maroon Lions bumped their record to 3-2 with a 28-6 road victory over Abilene Wylie Thursday night.
The Lions grabbed a 14-0 halftime lead thanks to a pair of second-quarter touchdowns. First, Major Bowden scored on a 37-yard run, then Bowden again found the end zone 3 yards out and followed with a two-point conversion.
Brownwood stretched the advantage to 22-0 in the third quarter on a 64-yard scamper by Bowden, who then tossed the two-point pass to Uriah King.
After Wylie closed the gap to 22-6 on a 36-yard touchdown pass to end the third quarter, the Lions added a final insurance touchdown in the fourth on a 19-yard carry by Elias Huerta.
Stellar defensive efforts were turned in by King (8 tackles), Ethan Pesina (5 tackles), Huerta (4 tackles, 1 TFL), Jakob Hataway (2 tackles, 1 PBU), and Tyler Helms (1 tackle, INT),
Wylie 36, JV Lions 19
The Brownwood JV Lions slipped to 2-3 on the season with a 36-19 loss at Abilene Thursday.
Wylie took opening kickoff and drove the field for initial score and eventually extended its lead to 22-0.
Brownwood tallied first points on a 32-yard touchdown pass from Blaize Espinoza to Hunter Day, and Espinoza booted the extra point.
The Lions added their second touchdown in the second half when Espinoza connected with Ricky Galvan on a 27-yard scoring toss, the but the extra point failed.
Brownwood tacked on a final touchdown when Espinoza scored on a 12-yard carry.
Defensive standouts included Adrian Villarreal, Branson Koepp-Cox and Jimmy Brown.
According to the coaching staff, the Lions had too many turnovers on offense and gave up too many passing plays on defense to win the game. Brownwood played better in the second half and continued to battle but couldn’t overcome deficit from first half.
