Looking to duplicate their American Southwest Conference-opening victory over Sul Ross, the Howard Payne Lady Jackets on Tuesday were instead dealt a heartbreaking five-set loss — their 10th consecutive defeat.
The visiting Lady Lobos emerged with a 25-22, 9-25, 25-7, 16-25, 15-13 victory at the Brownwood Coliseum, avenging a five-set loss on their home floor to Howard Payne on Sept. 11.
The Lady Jackets remained winless at home in three matches and tumbled to 2-14 overall and 1-8 in ASC action, leaving them alone in sixth place in the West Division — 2.5 games behind both Sul Ross (4-9, 3-5) and Hardin-Simmons (11-7, 3-5) — with seven conference matches remaining. The top three teams from each division advance to the ASC championship tournament.
Howard Payne’s attack was spearheaded by Kailey Doering and Zhartaezia Bradley with 11 kills apiece trailed by Kylie Metcalf and Mya Ross with seven each, and McKenna Walker, Ashley Hessler and Madeleine Kelly with one apiece.
Walker distributed 34 assists while Doering, Metcalf and Kylee Shirley were each credited with one.
Ross served a team-best three aces followed by Doering and Shirley with two each and Walker and Bradley with one apiece.
Defensively, Shirley collected 15 digs trailed by Walker with 13, Ross and Jada Terry with seven apiece, Doering and Christian Wilson with six each, Bradley and Amaya Marshall both with a pair and Hessler with one.
Metcalf chalked up five blocks, Walker and Bradley finished with four each, Doering added three and Ross and Hessler notched one apiece.
Sul Ross received 16 kills from Isabella Ruiz, three blocks and three aces from Annika Canaba, 19 assists from Kylee Davis and 18 digs from Karigan Edwards.
Howard Payne visits ASC West rivals McMurry at 7 p.m. Friday and Hardin-Simmons at 2 p.m. Saturday.
