GLEN ROSE — The Brownwood Lions and Lady Lions secured the tennis program’s first outright district championship since 2002 with a 14-1 neutral site victory over Godley Thursday, sweeping the 7-4A field.

Lions No. 1 singles player Gabe Hinojosa tallied a 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 win over Brandon Hutto to finish undefeated in singles action during the regular season, a feat also accomplished by No. 6 singles player Oscar Ledezma, who did not see singles action Thursday.

Other singles wins for the Lions belonged to No. 4 Cameron Smith (6-1, 7-7 [13-11] over Colin Workman) and No. 5 Tanner Scull (6-2, 6-0 over Cole Stinson).

Doubles wins for the Lions came from No. 1 Hinojosa and Mo Goff (6-3, 6-4 over Hutto and Garrett Bell), No. 2 Scull and James Bautista (6-1, 6-2 over Workman and Stinson) and No. 3 Smith and Matthew Bundick (6-1, 6-0 over Tristen Gillam and Travis Marable).

For the Lady Lions, doubles triumphs were earned by No. 1 Piper Barberie and Kaytlin Welch (3-6, 6-1, 10-4 over Kailey Schroeder and Jaci Briggs), No. 2 Hannah Netherland and Mckinzie Adkins (6-1, 6-1 over Preslee Johnson and Gracie Dolan ) and No. 3 Kaylee Renfroe and Aaliyah Uvalle (6-2, 6-3 over Lily Thompson and Joleen Mooney).

Notching singles victories for the Lady Lions were No. 1 Barberie (6-0, 6-0 over Schroeder), No. 2 Adkins (6-1, 6-4 over Briggs), No. 3 Lillian Jonescue (6-1, 6-1 over Claire Hampton) and No. 6 Renfroe (6-3, 7-5 over Thompson.

Ledesma and Jonescue also teamed up for the mixed doubles win (6-3, 6-3 over Hampton and Hutto).

Due to winning the district championship, the Lions and Lady Lions will receive a bye through the bi-district round and will begin their postseason run in the area round the weekend of Oct. 18-20.
