The Brownwood JV Lions chalked up a 25-7 victory over Gatesville Thursday night in the District 5-4A Division I opener for both teams.

The Lions jumped in front, 6-0, with 6:50 left in the first period on a 38-yard touchdown pass from Blaize Espinoza to Braden Bushnell.

Brownwood extended its advantage 12-0 at 3:34 of the second quarter on an 18-yard touchdown run by Royshad Henderson.

With 1:11 left in the opening half, Baylor Tidwell hurled a 66-yard touchdown pass to Braden Bushnell as the Lions stretched the lead to 18-0.

Brownwood’s Hyden Carrey recovered a loose ball on the ensuing kick, and 16 seconds later the Lions were back in the end zone after a 38-yard connection between Tidwell and Bushnell. Bushnell also added the extra point kick.

Leading 25-0 at halftime, the Lions’ bid for a shutout ended with 1:12 left in the game on a 3-yard touchdown carry by Gatesville.

The Brownwood freshman teams did not play Thursday.
