The Howard Payne University athletic department announced Friday that men’s and women’s assistant soccer coach Kevin Wright will take over as the new men’s head coach on June 1.

Wright has served as the men’s and women’s assistant soccer coach at Howard Payne for their first two seasons of competition. Wright served under Yellow Jackets and Lady Jackets head coach Sam McCutchen, who was hired in 2006 to start and establish the men’s and women’s soccer programs at Howard Payne.

“This is great opportunity to continue building a program that I feel is headed on the right track,” Wright said. “We have a great group of players here and an administration that supports our program. Coach McCutchen has done a great job in starting this program and I hope to keep them on the rise.”

McCutchen will remain the head women’s soccer coach at Howard Payne.

In their first two seasons, the Yellow Jackets posted a record of 7-23, while the Lady Jackets were 6-27. Both teams improved their win totals in their second season of play.

Wright came to Howard Payne from Greenville High School, a program he built into a powerhouse. Before taking over the job in 2003, Greenville finished the 2002 season with a record of 4-15-2. In his first season, Wright led Greenville to a 17-5 record and the District 13-4A championship. This also earned him the coach of the year award in 13-4A. Greenville’s growth did not stop there as it won district titles in 2005 and 2006, finished as a regional semi-finalist in 2005 advanced to the regional quarterfinals in 2006.

Wright has been named district coach of the year three times — 2003, 2005 and 2006. He also was selected to coach the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches (TASCO) All-Star Game and invited to speak at the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) coaching school. He currently holds the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Advanced National Diploma.

Wright is a 2001 graduate of Mary Hardin-Baylor with a degree in Exercise and Sport Science. He has been married five years to Melinda and they have two children, a 4-year-old son Tavin and a 2-year-old daughter McKenna.

“We are excited to promote Kevin Wright to the men’s head soccer position,” said Mike Jones, Howard Payne director of athletics. “He has served Coach McCutchen well as our assistant the last two years and is now ready to take on the head job. I think Coach Wright as our men’s coach and Coach McCutchen as our women’s coach will make for a good situation for our soccer programs.”
