SAN ANGELO — Brownwood High returned to the tennis courts Saturday, but fell shy in its bid for the first victory of the fall season.
The Lions and Lady Lions came up short against 4A Lake View, 14-5, and dropped a 15-4 decision to 5A Central.
In the Lake View match, singles victories were earned by girls No. 1 Joan Burks (1-6, 6-2, 10-7 over Vanessa Arredondo) and boys No. 4 Michael Fuller (5-7, 6-2, 10-7 over Stephen Hardin).
The girls doubles teams of No. 1 Burks and Claire Faetche (6-3, 2-6, 10-7 over Arredondo and Brooklyn Dendle) and No. 2 Shasta Pruett and Becky Kinman (6-1, 4-6, 10-5) picked up wins. Kinman sprained an ankle during the match.
The No. 3 boys doubles team of Cody Snyder and Brian Bowen (6-2, 6-4) also collected a victory.
In JV action against Lake View, Emily Harding (8-1) and Breanna Parker (8-0) earned girls singles wins.
Against Central, Burks remained unbeaten in singles action with a 6-3, 6-2 sweep of Caitlin Buck. Pruett added a 6-1, 7-6, 7-0 victory over Mallory Melott in No. 3 singles, while Burks and Faetche teamed up for a No. 1 doubles win (6-2, 6-3 over Buck and Melott).
On the boys side, Bowen — a freshman — earned his first singles win over David Sweets, 4-6, 6-2, 10-6 in the No. 6 slot.
Brian Thomas added an 8-2 singles win in JV action.
Also competing for the Lions in Saturday varsity singles and doubles matches were Darren Ridley, Brandon Thompson and Andrew Harding. For the Lady Lions, Krystal Garcia, Presley Parker and Stephanie Sanchez also saw varsity action.
Next for Brownwood (0-4) is a 4 p.m. Tuesday match at Granbury.
