BALLINGER — The Brownwood Lions earned their first victory in their fourth outing of the season Friday, downing the Hamlin Pied Pipers, 55-41, at the Ballinger tournament.

Brownwood was led by 18 points from Marquos Barnes and 10 apiece from Graylon Brown and Chris Cotton. The Lions converted 26 field goals — 25 of the two-point variety — and shot 2-of-6 at the free throw line.

The Lions jumped out to a 13-9 lead after one quarter and boosted their advantage to 25-17 at halftime. Hamlin closed the gap to 35-30 after three quarters, but Brownwood pulled away by scoring 20 of the 31 points in the fourth period.

Brownwood (1-3) will face Colorado City or Sonora at 10:30 a.m. in its tournament finale. The Lions opened the weekend with a 49-43 loss to Sonora on Thursday.

Ballinger 37, Lady Lions 25

BALLINGER — The Brownwood Lady Lions lost for just the second time in the last six games, but struggled mightily on the offensive end in Friday’s 37-25 loss to Class 2A No. 12 Ballinger in the Ballinger tournament.

The Lady Lions (4-4) followed a season-high 63 points in Thursday’s 22-point victory over Sonora with their season-low against Ballinger — including a mere seven points in the first half. Brownwood converted only 10 field goals.

Patricia Wilson scored nine points for Brownwood, trailed by six from Sydnie Darden, five from Sara Byrd and two points apiece from Amanda Gober, Kelsey Gober and Trinity Ansons.

The Lady Lions will wrap up tournament play against Big Lake at 3 p.m. today.
