The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets experienced both ends of the spectrum as a record-setting win was followed by a narrow loss in American Southwest Conference weekend soccer action.

The Yellow Jackets set a new school record for goals in a game during Friday’s 6-1 victory over Louisiana College. Mississippi College then came to town Saturday and snatched a 3-1 win.

In Friday’s win, Malcolm Wentworth led Howard Payne (6-5-3, 4-5-1) with a pair of goals, while Michael Hatcher, Brice Reusink, Ramses NaJeebe and Brent Bynum also found the net.

Ben Bishop recorded three assists - all coming on the Yellow Jackets’ first three goals. Chris Martinez added two assists and NaJeebe had one.

The Yellow Jackets built a 4-0 halftime lead as goals were scored by Wentworth (13:21), Hatcher (22:28), Reusink (24:28) and NaJeebe (36:24) before halftime. Wentworth scored his second goal 13:42 into the second half, while Bynum got on the board with 29:56 remaining.

HPU’s previous high of five goals scored occurred on Aug. 31, 2007 in an exhibition contest against Hill College.

Louisiana College (1-12, 1-6) tallied its lone goal with 30:18 remaining as Barrett Broussard scored off a Felipe Escabado assist.

Howard Payne finished with 18 shots to Louisiana College’s nine. Francisco Medina notched three saves for the Yellow Jackets, while Malcolm Framjee added one.

On Saturday, Jacob Shuttleworth scored Howard Payne’s only goal on an assist from Reusink with 17 minutes left.
