LINDALE — With a pair of victories Thursday, the Early Purple qualified for today’s championship game of the 14-team TTAS Junior Girls state tournament.

Following two nine-inning victories to open the tournament, Early beat Winnsboro by an 11-1 count Thursday. That victory propelled the Purple into a showdown with West for the first state game berth, which Early won, 2-1. Madison Berry scored both Early runs in the nightcap, the first on a solo home run in the fourth inning and the game-winner in the seventh on an RBI base hit by Caitlynd Henry.

Early will play a team to be determined at 7 tonight for the state championship.

Wild Thangz one win from title game

WEST — The Brownwood Wild Thangz need a victory at 5 p.m. to advance to tonight’s state championship game at the 16-team TTAS Freshman Girls state tournament.

The Wild Thangz will face either Valley Mills or West, and the winner will move on to challenge Rusk, which knocked off the Wild Thangz Thursday.

The Wild Thangz would then need to defeat Rusk at 7 tonight and capture a second championship game to claim the state title.

With a loss in the 5 p.m. game, the Wild Thangz would finish third at state.

The Wild Thangz chalked up wins in their first three tournament games as they defeated Lexington (5-3), Rogers (5-4) and Comanche (7-2).
