The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets stretched their American Southwest Conference and overall win streaks to three games each by sweeping LeTourneau and East Texas Baptist at Citizens National Bank Field over the weekend.

On Friday, the Jackets chalked up their second straight conference victory, blanking LeTourneau by a 2-0 count.

Jaime Benitez scored HPU’s first goal at the 57:28 mark on a dual assist by Scott Irias and Shane Cazad. At the 70:08 juncture, the Yellow Jackets received an insurance goal from Paul Deets — his first of the season — with the assist going to Shawn Stratton.

Francisco Medina played all 90 minutes in goal for HPU and recorded four saves.

Howard Payne attempted nine shots on goal, and finished with 19 shots overall to 11 for LeTourneau.

In Saturday action, the Jackets squeezed past East Texas Baptist, 1-0.

Howard Payne tallied the game’s lone goal in the 61st minute when Kelton McMillian found the net on an assist from Malcolm Wentworth.

Medina recorded just one save, but posted his second consecutive shutout. HPU attempted nine shots on goal to just one by ETBU.

The Yellow Jackets (4-3, 3-1) will be back in action Thursday when they visit UT-Tyler at 7:30 p.m.

Lady Jackets split weekend games

The Howard Payne Lady Jackets piled up the goals in Friday’s 6-2 win over LeTourneau. The victory kept HPU undefeated in ASC play through its first three contests, but the Lady Jackets suffered their first conference defeat at the hands of East Texas Baptist, 1-0, Saturday.

Against LeTourneau, Leslie Jones recorded a hat trick for the Lady Jackets, scoring three goals at the 18:48, 23:14 and 64:42 marks. Karla Kallanter (47:14), Lauren Hankins (47-16) and Ta’Kenda Cotton (81:03) also contributed goals as Howard Payne raced out to a 3-0 halftime advantage and notched the first four goals overall.

Susanna Chavarria finished with two assists, while Cotton, Hankins and Lori Horn recorded one assist apiece.

Kirby Posey scored LeTourneau’s goals at the 49:50 and 85:30 junctures.

In goal, ASC goalkeeper of the week Kaitlyn Kelm recorded two saves in 88 minutes of action. Cotton played the final two minutes in goal for the Lady Jackets.

Howard Payne attempted 17 shots overall, and 11 on goal, compared to eight shots overall and four on goal for LeTourneau.

In Saturday’s match with ETBU, Rebecca Davis scored in the 89th minute on an assist from Danica Saxon to end the Lady Jackets’ unbeaten streak.

Kelm tallied five saves for the Lady Jackets, while the HPU offense attempted just four shots on goal.

The Lady Jackets (3-4-1, 2-1-1) will attempt to rebound at 1 p.m. Thursday when they head to UT-Tyler.
