The Howard Payne Lady Jackets soccer team secured the first winning season in program history with Tuesday’s 5-0 non-conference win over the University of Dallas in the home finale.
The Lady Jackets, who are in their third season of competition, improved to 10-8 with the victory.
Howard Payne also is still alive in the American Southwest Conference championship tournament chase as it carries a 7-5 conference mark into Saturday’s season finale at Mary Hardin-Baylor.
The Lady Jackets are currently sixth in the ASC standings, and the top six teams advance to the tournament. Howard Payne (7-5 in ASC action) leads Texas Lutheran (8-8, 6-5) and East Texas Baptist (6-9, 6-5) by a half-game in the standings and trails fifth-place Mary Hardin-Baylor (9-7, 8-4) by one game.
In Tuesday’s victory over Dallas, Takenda Cotton and Lauren Haskins each scored two goals while Kelli Wentworth added the fifth.
Howard Payne’s lone save was recorded by Allison Gudmundson.
Dallas 2, Jackets 0
The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets’ winless drought hit four games Tuesday as they suffered their third loss in that span, 2-0, to the University of Dallas in the home finale at Citizens National Bank Field.
The University of Dallas scored both its goals in the first half on kicks by Ryan Meske and Adam Lunger.
Howard Payne (5-7-4, 4-6-2) attempted just three shots on goal - two by Dennis Benitez and one by Scott Irias.
Francisco Medina notched five saves in goal for Howard Payne.
The Jackets and Lady Jackets close the regular season in Belton at 1 p.m. Saturday against Mary Hardin-Baylor. The women’s game will start the doubleheader.
