Following a 3-11-4 inaugural season ó with all three victories coming against league foes ó the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets are projected to finish 11th out of 14 teams in the American Southwest Conference menís soccer race, according to the preseason poll released earlier this week.
Howard Payne ó which finished with two victories and a tie in its final five contests ó earned conference wins over Concordia, Mississippi College and Louisiana College.
Head coach Sam McCutchen will have a roster of 12 freshmen, eight sophomores and no upperclassmen in the second year of the program.
Among the returnees are all-conference honorable mention midfielders Malcolm Wentworth and Dennis Benitez.
The Yellow Jackets are scheduled to open the season against Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio at 4 p.m. Monday, then host Northwood University at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Both the Yellow Jackets and Lady Jackets will be in exhibition action today as they host Hill College in a 4 p.m. doubleheader.
The UT-Tyler Patriots were picked to win a third straight ASC menís soccer championship. UT-Tyler, which went 14-2-1 and 11-1-1 in conference play last season, pulled in 385 points and 23 of a possible 28 first-place votes in the annual preseason poll.
Head coach Kenny Jonesí Patriots are eligible for postseason play this year after serving as an NCAA provisional member the past four seasons.

Schreiner, the host of the 2006 ASC Championship Tournament, was picked to finish second with 341 points. The Mountaineers went 10-3 in league play last season.
Mississippi College landed in the third spot by totaling 322 votes with three first-place votes.
