CLARKSVILLE, Ark. - The Howard Payne soccer teams split an American Southwest Conference doubleheader against the University of the Ozarks here Thursday.

The Lady Jackets rallied from a halftime deficit with a pair of goals in the final 26 minutes for a 2-1 victory over the Lady Eagles.

The Yellow Jackets, meanwhile, gave up four goals in the second half as the Eagles pulled away for a 5-2 victory.

In the women’s game, Takenda Cotton scored the winning goal on assist from Kelli Wentworth with 6:55 remaining. Susana Chavarria’s goal, assisted by Ashli McCutchen, pulled the Lady Jackets (6-4, 5-2 in ASC) even at 1-all with 25:48 left in the game.

Ozarks (4-8, 2-4) built a 1-0 halftime lead thanks to Laura Spruiell’s goal, which was assisted by Marisa Maldonado, with 6:13 left in the first half.

Howard Payne finished with 12 shots on goal, led by 10 from Cotton.

Ozarks attempted just four shots on goal and Lady Jacket goal keeper Rachael Hardegree, who went the distance, tallied three saves.

In men’s action, Ozarks (8-2-2, 3-2-1) took the lead just 2:06 into the contest as Guido Salas scored off a corner kick by Dylan Evans.

Howard Payne (4-3-2, 3-3-1) responded 20:17 later as Shane Cazad scored off a Dennis Benitez assist to even the score at 1-all.

Ozarks regained the advantage, 2-1, just 35 seconds into the second half when Salas scored for the second time on an assist from Philip Johnson.

The Eagles increased their lead to 3-1 with 24:46 left as Salas recorded the hat trick, scoring his third goal on a Matt Engelman assist.

Howard Payne crept back within a goal at 3-2 with 12:39 left on Cazad’s second goal, which was assisted by Chris Martinez.

But Ozarks needed just 22 seconds to respond as Evans found the back of the net for a 4-2 Ozarks lead.

The Eagles tacked on a final insurance goal with 6:45 left as Brandon Pierson scored off an assist from Salas.

Howard Payne attempted three shots on goal to Ozarks’ 13, while Yellow Jacket goal keeper Francisco Medina recorded eight saves, to the one of Eagle goalie Brian Sarber.

The Lady Jackets and Yellow Jackets return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday as they visit UT-Dallas for another ASC doubleheader.
