AUSTIN — Brownwood Lady Lion senior Jalisa Hall, a four-time regional qualifier, finally made her debut at the UIL state track and field meet Saturday, where she finished fifth in the Class 3A girls discus at the University of Texas’ Myers Stadium.

Hall’s best effort measured 126-2, which was slightly short of her distance of 131-10 at the Region I-3A meet — which was the second-best performance for a state qualifier in regional competition.

“It was pretty fun and I really liked being in this atmosphere,” Hall said. “I wish I had another year to come back.”

Though she came up two spots shy of a medal, Hall’s fifth-place performance is extremely impressive considering the consistency issues she battled at the state meet. Of her six throws, only two counted as the other four were disqualified.

“At first I felt pretty relaxed, but maybe I was too relaxed. I don’t really know,” Hall said. “My first throws were pretty bad or foul. I thought I was just getting the bad ones over with, but I never recovered. I wish I could just start over.”

Kennedale’s Stacia Newton (150-5) went on to capture the 3A girls discus state championship, while Jill Hydrick of Ingleside (143-2) grabbed the silver medal and Kiara Wright of Pittsburg (132-6) snagged the bronze.

La Vernia’s Loren Smith was fourth (126-9), trailed by Hall, Kallie Johanson of Llano (124-0), Gladewater’s Tina Valentine (122-9) and Taylor’s Chasity Douglas (120-8).

Hall put the finishing touches on a stellar school year in which she was named co-Girls All-Sports award winner — along with fellow senior Alex Williams — played on the state finalist volleyball team and was a member of the regional quarterfinalist softball squad.

Hall intends to continue her track and field career at Texas State, but she had hoped for a more fitting conclusion to her storied high school run.

“I think it went pretty well and I can’t complain,” said Hall of her high school accomplishments, “but I am disappointed today.”

The Brown County 2008-09 high school sports season reached its conclusion with Hall’s appearance at state Saturday.
