Brownwood High School will play its final tune-up before the State 7-on-7 tournament when it hosts its annual tournament this Saturday. Sixteen teams will compete in four pools for two spots to the tournament, which begins July 10 in College Station.
“We use the tournaments to continue to practice. It’s a competitive situation and it helps get us ready for College Station,” Brownwood Offensive Coordinator and 7-on-7 Coordinator Mitch Moore said. “We’ll just continue to work on what we’ve been trying to do.”
Nine of the sixteen teams competing here this Saturday have already qualified for the state tournament. Moore said they will play their three pool games and then stop. The semi-finals and finals will consist of teams who have not qualified for the state tournament.
Brownwood will play in pool two with Georgetown, San Antonio Clark and Eastland. Georgetown has also qualified for state.
Bangs will play in pool one with Abilene Cooper (state qualifier), Wichita Falls High School and Copperas Cove. Early will play in pool three with Lake Travis, Stephenville and Temple. Lake Travis and Stephenville have qualified for state.
Pool four is Abilene High and Brady (both state qualifiers) and Midlothian and Fredericksburg.
Pool games will be played at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. at Brownwood High School. After a break for lunch, the semifinals will begin around 1:15 at Gordon Wood Stadium. The final will follow about an hour later.
The Lions have qualified at the Division II level (1-3A) and will compete in the latter at College Station. According to Moore, pool play for the Lions will begin on Thursday, July 10 with bracket play and the finals on July 11.
