ABILENE ó A pair of former Brownwood Lions and current members of the Hardin-Simmons golf team, Brian Laing and Michael Weehunt, teamed with Scott Hearne of Cleburne and Rhyn Weehunt of Brownwood to win the 2007 Hardin-Simmons Joe Black Classic held Aug. 3.
The four-man team shot a 19-under par score of 53 at the par 72 Fairway Oaks Country Club to win by three strokes in the scramble format event.
The classic is an annual fund-raiser held in honor of its namesake, a former PGA tour member and long-time supporter of Hardin-Simmons menís and womenís golf.
The Hardin-Simmons golf program is led by David Sherman, now in his eighth season as the head coach of both the Cowboys and Cowgirls programs.
Sherman, who played collegiate golf for the University of Miami (Fla.), has been very successful as both a player and golf instructor. He has been a PGA Professional for over 30 years and has been a teaching professional for the last seven years. Sherman has also been nominated for Golf Magazineís top 100 instructors.
Weehunt will be a senior and Laing will be a junior at Hardin-Simmons in the fall semester.
