Two members of the state semifinalist Early Lady Horns softball team, and the Brownwood Lady Lions’ single-season home run record holder were recently honored with all-state selections by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.
Brownwood senior second baseman Kerri Jones — the co-MVP of District 2-3A — was voted to the Class 3A team following a campaign in which she launched a school-record 13 home runs, tallied 53 RBIs and batted .418. Jones also ranked second on the team with a .945 fielding percentage and made several acrobatic catches not only this season, but throughout her career.
Jones helped the Lady Lions reach the regional quarterfinals for the first time since 2006.
Early juniors Janna Allen and Tresta Donahoo — both 2A picks — played crucial roles as the Lady Horns earned their first trip to Austin.
Allen led Class 2A in pitching victories as she posted a 32-5 record with a 1.02 ERA and 185 strikeouts in 213 innings. She also yielded just 125 hits and 20 walks and finished with a 0.68 WHIP.
“I can’t appreciate enough what Janna does in the circle each and every game,” said Early head coach Bryan Waller. “Her leadership this year was so important to the team’s success.”
Donahoo — Early’s catcher who will long be remembered for scoring the only run in the Lady Horns’ Game 1 regional championship series victory over Coahoma — overcame early injuries to shine in the playoffs.
Donahoo finished the year with a .476 batting average, 24 RBIs, 25 runs, 14 steals and only five strikeouts at the plate. Defensively, she threw out 23-of-28 attempted base stealers.
“Words can’t describe the heart, dedication and intensity Tresta brings to the game and anything she is involved in,” Waller said.
The TGCA also released its academic all-state team, and Jones was one of four Lady Lions on the 3A list. She was joined by fellow seniors Jalisa Hall, Sayla Parsons and Jessica Seaton.
Bangs Lady Dragons Molly Davis, Shayla James and Courtney Truitt were 2A academic all-staters.
