The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets and Lady Jackets will head into their first road trip of the season still searching for their initial wins following a tough opening soccer weekend.
The Lady Jackets were upended 4-0 by Southwestern Saturday, after falling to Milwaukee School of Engineering, 2-1, in Friday’s season opener.
The Yellow Jackets, who played just once this weekend, came up short in double overtime against Milwaukee School of Engineering, 1-0, on Friday.
In Saturday’s setback for the Lady Jackets, Southwestern led 3-0 just 23 minutes into the game on a pair of goals by A.J. Andreola and one by Laura Kromann. Danielle Madison added the fourth goal in the 61st minute.
Howard Payne saved 13 shots, led by seven from Allison Gudmundson and five from Kaitlyn Kelm.
Ta’Kenda Cotton and Lauren Hankins fired two shots each for the Lady Jackets.
In Friday’s loss to MSOE, Howard Payne took the lead just 2:27 into the second half on a goal by senior Susana Chavarria.
MSOE evened the score at 1-all in the 73rd minute on a goal Jamie Janczak. Three minutes later, Mindy Donald found the net to put MSOE up 2-1.
Kelm played all 90 minutes in goal for the Lady Jackets and recorded four saves.
In the Yellow Jackets’ Friday game, the only goal was scored in the 115th minute by MSOE’s Joe Westrich. Goal keeper Alex Mejac went the distance for MSOE, recording nine saves.
HPU brothers Jaime and Dennis Benitez combined to attempt six shots on goal, while Shane Cazed fired two shots, one on goal. Kyle Huesing tallied five saves in goal for the Yellow Jackets (0-1), who return to action Friday at Wayland Baptist.
The Lady Jackets (0-2) will also square off with Wayland Baptist in Plainview on Friday, then both HPU teams will head to Eastern New Mexico for Saturday action.
