Bulletin Staff Report
The Brownwood Lions and Lady Lions couldn’t have asked for a better start to District 16-4A tennis competition. Playing host to Killeen, Brownwood rolled to a 19-0 win Tuesday.
“This was an awesome job today and probably our best overall match of the year,” said Brownwood head tennis coach Dave Cunha.
The Lady Lions were playing short-handed, but still won all their singles and doubles matches. Recording victories were Claire Faetche, Joan Burks, Julia Arledge, Sophia Chaput, Ilse Rincon, Kinsey Colegrave and Krysta Whitehead.
“We were missing three of our top six varsity girls due to illness,” Cunha said. “All of the girls stepped up and really took care of business. Some were playing two or three spots higher in the lineup than normal and others were playing their very first varsity match.”
The Lions duplicated the Lady Lions’ feat by winning all their singles and doubles matches as well. Winners included Will Thomas, Luis Vallecillo, Gabe Cardenas, Steven Pinkard, Matt Roddam, Ryan Hembree, Bubba Vannoy and Ryan Barkley.
“We had some extremely close matches but were able to come through in every one,” Cunha said. “I was really proud of the way the team came prepared to play and stepped it up.”
Brownwood (1-0 in 16-4A) will return to district action Tuesday with a trip to Waco High.
