Howard Payne University will hold a dedication ceremony for the TexasBank basketball court and enhancements in between today’s basketball games at the Brownwood Coliseum.
The ceremony will be held immediately following the top-ranked Lady Jackets’ 1 p.m. conference game against the University of the Ozarks. Following the dedication, the Yellow Jackets will face Ozarks in a game scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
Admission to both games is free.
Participants in the ceremony will include Dallas Huston, the broadcast voice of HPU athletics; Dr. Lanny Hall, university president; Mike Jones, director of athletics; Chris Kielsmeier, head women’s basketball coach; Meia Daniels, senior women’s basketball starter; Charles Pattillo, head men’s basketball coach; Lee Scott, senior men’s basketball starter; Laura Busha, president of the Student Government Association; C. Norman Tinkler, vice chairman and CEO of TexasBank; and Dr. Richard Jackson, HPU alumnus and former member of the board of trustees.
“We are very grateful to the donors who have made these much-needed improvements possible,” Hall said. “We are deeply appreciative of TexasBank for their significant gift and express additional thanks to all others who have given to this project.
“Our basketball programs are poised for even greater success thanks to these outstanding new facility enhancements, and the support of our donors will not be forgotten. We thank TexasBank President C. Norman Tinkler and the Board of Directors for their leadership in making these wonderful enhancements a reality.”
TexasBank is a community bank committed to serving all customers in Brown, Comanche and Erath counties and all contiguous counties. The bank has been a long-time supporter of HPU, since its founding in 1985.
For more than four decades, HPU’s basketball teams have played their home games in the Brownwood Coliseum. The facility opened in 1964 and the portable floor that the men’s and women’s basketball teams had previously played on was 10 years older than the coliseum itself.
The floor had to be sanded and finished multiple times throughout the years to the point that further refurbishment was not possible. The new floor meets 2007 NCAA standards and should have a lifetime of at least 50 years.
The past two seasons the Howard Payne basketball programs have been able to host American Southwest Conference championship basketball tournaments at the Brownwood Coliseum. The men hosted in 2006 and the women hosted in 2007.
