FORT WORTH — Former Brownwood Lion Bart Johnson recovered a blocked punt and returned it 17 yards for TCU’s first touchdown in the Horned Frogs’ 21-7 victory over the SMU Mustangs Saturday at Amon Carter Stadium.
Johnson scooped up Thomas Morstead’s block and raced to the end zone at the 4:14 mark of the first period. The touchdown and ensuing extra point from Chris Manfredini pulled the Horned Frogs (2-2) — who snapped a two-game losing streak — even with SMU at 7-all.
TCU’s final two touchdowns scored during the second period as Robert Henson returned an interception of a Justin Willis pass 58 yards to give the Horned Frogs a 14-7 advantage.
Later in the quarter, Marcus Jackson connected with Derek Moore on a 15-yard scoring toss.
SMU (1-3) outgained TCU in total yardage, 352-251. The Horned Frogs passed for just 108 yards and rushing for 143, while the Mustangs threw for 203 yards and picked up 149 on the ground.
The Mustangs jumped in front, 7-0, DeMyron Martin rushed for a 15-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Martin finished with 101 yards rushing, while Willis was 19-of-34 for 203 yards.
Aaron Brown picked up 93 yards on the ground to lead the TCU ground game.
