The Howard Payne Lady Jackets captured their home opener, and snapped a five-game losing streak in the process, with a straight-set victory over American Southwest Conference rival McMurry Tuesday night at the Brownwood Coliseum.

Howard Payne ó which had not defeated McMurry since 2006 ó rolled to a 25-22, 25-21, 25-21 victory, improving to 3-7 overall and 1-1 in ASC action.

Amanda Gutierrez led the Lady Jackets with 10 kills, followed by nine from Tamika Heline, eight from Sydney Bryant, four apiece from Megan Pick and Cathie Kilmartin and three from Amber Cantu-Curry.

Kristin Hammond posted a team-high 10 digs, trailed by eight from Bryant, two each from Heline, Cantu-Curry and Amy Cardwell and one apiece from Pick and Megan Guerra.

Cardwell notched 18 of HPUís assists, with nine coming from Cantu-Curry.

Heline finished with three aces, while Cantu-Curry recorded one.

For McMurry (3-5, 0-1 in ASC), Terah Brown finished with eight of the teamís 29 kills, Sarah Anding and Kelsey Campbell collected eight digs each, and Carmyn Wingrove tallied 14 of the teamís 25 assists.

The Lady Jackets will return to action at 11 a.m. Saturday as they visit Hardin-Simmons in ASC action.
