Three Texas Teen-Age Softball districts crowned tournament champions within the borders of Brown County last week, and four Texas Teen-Age Baseball districts will do the same before the end of this week.
Brownwood’s Camp Bowie Sports Complex will host a pair of district tournaments for the second consecutive week, while district champions will also be determined in Early and Bangs.
Coaches’ meetings to determine the brackets in all four tournaments were slated to take place Sunday afternoon, and a complete listing of games for each tournament will be available in Monday’s edition of the Bulletin.
The four-team TTAB District 5 Junior Midget tournament, as well as the six-team TTAB District 5 Junior Boys tournament, will both be played in Brownwood. The two teams that reach the championship game in each tournament will advance to state, which begins July 23. The 12-team Junior Midget state tournament will be held in Athens, while the 10-team Junior Boys state tournament will take place in Lancaster.
Competing in the Junior Midget tournament will be the Brownwood Astros, the Brownwood Cardinals, the Early Scrappers and the Early Orioles.
Comprising the Junior Boys tournament field are the Brownwood Rangers, the Brownwood A’s, the Bangs Astros, Early Purple, the Hamilton Blue Sox and the Hico Katz.
Bangs will welcome five teams to the TTAB District 2 Freshman Tight-Base tournament, while four teams will play in Early’s TTAB District 12 Freshman Open-Base tournament.
Both tournaments consist of players in the 12-and-under age group, but the difference in the two leagues involves base running rules. In open-base competition, players are allowed to lead off a bag — which is also the case in high school, college and professional baseball. In tight-base action, the base runners must remain on the bag until the pitch is thrown.
The tournament field in Bangs will include the Bangs Dragons, Winters Nitros, Tuscola Reds, Miles and the Tuscola Orioles. The first and second place teams in the tournament will move on to state in Colorado City on July 23. Nine teams will compete at state.
Early’s tournament features the Early Astros, the Early Rangers, the Brownwood Rangers and the Brownwood Tigers. Only the tournament champion will advance to state from this district. The 14-team state tournament will be held in Whitehouse beginning July 23.
Outside of Brown County, the Early Yankees and a team from May will compete in the six-team TTAB District 13 Senior Midget tournament in Eastland. If one of those teams captures the district title, they will head to Brownwood on July 23, site of the TTAB Senior Midget state championship tournament.
