Bulletin Staff Report

EARLY — Laketta Vaccaro’s grand slam capped a two-out, six-run rally in the sixth inning as the Brownwood Young Guns charged past Brownwood Down N Dirty, 9-5, and into the Texas Teen-Age Softball Midget Girls state tournament.

The Young Guns — who lost to Down N Dirty, 6-5, in the tournament opener Monday at the Camp Bowie Sports Complex — also defeated the Ballinger Home Run Hotties earlier Friday in their march to the tournament championship game.

The Young Guns and the Hawley Diamonds — District 7’s other state tournament qualifier — were meeting in the championship game late Friday night at the Early High School softball field. After another brief downpour at Camp Bowie Friday afternoon, the final two games of the tournament were shifted to Early.

Due to deadline restrictions, the result of the championship game will not appear in today’s edition of the Bulletin.

The Young Guns and Hawley are two of 20 teams comprising the TTAS Midget Girls state tournament field in Lindale. The tournament is slated to begin July 16.

In other tournament action Friday, the Ballinger Home Run Hotties eliminated the Brownwood Thunder, while Hawley knocked off Down N Dirty to set up the all-Brownwood semifinal.
