The Brownwood Lions Freshman Maroon football team improved to 2-1 with a 25-18 win over Stephenville Thursday night.
Slate Miller scored on runs of 15 and 20 yards, Irish Cooper chipped in a 15-yard touchdown run and Chris Perez returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown.
Defensively for the Lions, Michael Westerman recovered a pair of fumbles in the fourth quarter, while Jonathan Lindley forced a fumble. Other defensive standouts included Dylan Martin, Chris Garcia, Jeffrey Newton, Bryce Vickers and Newt Harrell.
Top offensive players included Caleb Wilbourn, Payton Lee, Kevin Hobbs, Nathan Pfoh and Christian Perez along the line, and running back Cameron Deal.
The Freshman Maroon Lions will be back in action at 6 p.m. Thursday in Liberty Hill.
Freshman White Lions 20,
The Brownwood Lions Freshman White football team jumped out to an early three-touchdown lead, then held on down the stretch to defeat Stephenville.
William Murray scored on runs of 3 and 16 yards and a caught 65-yard scoring toss from Tim Murphy to account for the Lions’ touchdowns.
Stephenville scored twice in the fourth quarter on a 20-yard run and 50-yard pass.
Standouts for the Lions included running back Zane McCoy, left tackle Blake Dudley and left guard Emilio Salazar on offense, along with linebackers Slayden McAnally and Cory Ogden on defense.
JV Lions-Stephenville canceled
The Brownwood Lions-Stephenville Yellow Jackets JV contest was called in the third period due to weather.
Brownwood trailed at the time, 14-6, with the lone Lions touchdown coming when Sam Humeniuk scored on a screen pass behind a stellar block from Angel Castillo.
De Netro Clifton helped lead the defensive effort.
The JV Lions will travel to Liberty Hill Thursday to face the Panthers.
