HILLSBORO - A group of high school baseball players from Brownwood, Bangs and Coleman - collectively called Cen-Tex Baseball - competed in the TTAB High School Eligible state tournament over the weekend.
The team consisted of Tanner Vaughn, Jesse Coppic, J.C. Pitts and Josh Fleming of Brownwood; Doug Drury, Justin Kyle, Dustin Zink, Quentin Sprowls and Boone Cox from Bangs; and Devin Nunez of Coleman.
Greg Drury served as head coach and was assisted by Michael Luckey and Michael Coppic.
In 105-degree heat Saturday, Cen-Tex Baseball opened bracket play in the single elimination state tournament with an 8-6 victory over Hillsboro.
Pitts drove in the winning runs with a two-out, two-RBI single to right field. The victory advanced Cen-Tex to the round of eight, where it faced defending TTAB state champion Granger Sunday morning.
A sluggish start against Granger prevented Cen-Tex from advancing further as six unearned runs over the first two innings resulted in a 9-1 loss.
Cen-Tex Baseball posted a 2-3 weekend record as it also played three pool games and placed second behind Mexia.
Offensively, Cen-Tex was led by Drury, Vaughn, Coppic, Fleming and Kyle, who combined for nine extra-base hits and 16 RBIs.
