The state’s elite youth golfers again have converged on the Brownwood Country Club for the Texas Legends Junior Golf Tour’s Sixth Annual Bluebonnet Championship.
The 36-hole tournament, which features 115 golfers ages 18 and under, teed off Saturday and will conclude later today.
Through the initial 18 holes of competition, Brenden Redfern of Austin — the defending boys 15-18 champion — owned a one-shot lead after posting a first-round 68.
Three other golfers broke 70 and will enter today’s action one stroke off the lead — Tyler Holmes of Richardson, Jack Lempke of Frisco and Hunter Gathright of San Antonio.
In girls 15-18 action, Kelsey Kirkpatrick of Golden entered the tournament looking for her fourth win of the season in as many appearances. Through 18 holes, Kirkpatrick owned a two-shot lead after firing a 73 Saturday.
In second place, following a round of 75, was Kristine Guzman of San Antonio. The next closest golfer — Brooke Bailey of Abilene — carded an 82.
In boys 14-and-under play, Nicholas Roberts of McKinney carded a 70 to give him a one-stroke edge over Frisco’s Hunter Zetsche at the midway point. Those were the only under par scores Saturday in the boys 14-and-under ranks.
Brownwood’s Tyler Pattillo is competing in the 14-and-under division and shot a Saturday 83, which left him in 19th place.
Only two golfers comprised the girls 14-and-under division — Kirsten Pike of Ovilla (85) and Mackenzie Boydston of Keller (87).
