EARLY — The Brownwood Rangers capped an undefeated run through the Texas Teen-Age Baseball District 12 Freshman Open-Base tournament with a 7-2 championship game victory over the Early Astros Wednesday at the Early City Park.
With the victory, the Rangers earned a trip to the 14-team TTAB Freshman Open-Base state tournament in Whitehouse, which begins Monday, July 23. The Freshman Open-Base tournament is the only TTA district event out of the seven held in Brown County since July 2 not to take two teams to state.
Abel Jimenez became the third Ranger pitcher to toss a complete game in tournament competition. He also drove in two runs and scored another.
Jimenez was the first Ranger to score as Colt Evetts’ RBI single in the first inning plated him for a 1-0 Brownwood lead.
The Rangers added two more runs to their tally in the second inning as Jimenez singled home Cameron Deal, who reached on a base hit, and Justin Howard, who reached on an error, to increase Brownwood’s lead to 3-0.
Dylan Lewis knocked in Deal with an RBI single in the fourth inning as the Rangers upped the advantage to 4-0.
The final three Brownwood runs scored in the fifth inning as an error during Elijah Salazar’s at-bat allowed both Evetts, who reached on a single, and T.J. Espinoza, who drew a walk, to score. Howard then recorded an RBI base hit that plated Salazar with the Rangers’ final run.
Early’s two runs crossed the plate in the fifth inning and were scored by Austin Isom and Trever Bessent.
