The Brownwood Wild Thangz joined the Comanche Lady Aggies as the District 2 representatives at the 16-team TTAS Freshman Girls state tournament with their 9-3 victory over the rival Brownwood Crushers Friday at the Camp Bowie Sports Complex.

The Wild Thangz then went on to avenge a 3-2 loss to the Lady Aggies with victories of 13-3 in the first championship game and 13-10 in the second to capture the district title.

In the second championship game Friday, the Wild Thangz scored the first six runs in their first two at-bats and were able to withstand a late charge by the Lady Aggies.

Heather Mobley, who singled, and Ashley Vaccaro, who reached on a fielder’s choice, scored the first two Wild Thangz runs on a two-RBI single by Mercedes Hinze.

Hinze later scored when Alyson Finnigan reached safely on a two-out fielder’s choice.

Brownwood added three more runs in the second inning as Paxton Vaughn led off with an infield single and scored when Mobley reached on an error.

Vaccaro added an RBI single and was also able to race home due to an error in the outfield.

Brownwood also jumped out to an early lead in the first championship game.

The bottom of the first featured a two-RBI double by Vaccaro, which plated Vaughn and Emma Mullins. Vaccaro also scored on the play following a Comanche error.

Comanche pulled even at 3-all in the top of the second on an RBI ground out by Cinnamon Kiser, a bases-loaded free pass to Kyli Cottery and Kiser later scored on an error.

Brownwood regained the lead in the bottom of the second as Kember Croft walked and scored on Mobley’s RBI fielder’s choice.

Leading 4-3, the Wild Thangz added six runs in the fourth inning to bust open the game. Mobley homered in the inning and Vaughn scored when her single was misplayed into a home run.

Jali Roberts chipped in a two-RBI double during the frame, while Hinze and Vaccaro came home on Lady Aggie errors.

Brownwood tacked on the final three runs in the fifth with RBIs going to Laketta Vaccaro and Mobley.

Finnigan tallied the win and fanned seven.

The TTAS Freshman Girls state tournament begins Monday, July 21 in West.
