MARSHALL — Thanks to a fast start, the No. 2 Howard Payne Lady Jackets had little trouble keeping their perfect record intact.

Howard Payne scored 20 of the first 22 points in its 87-43 American Southwest Conference victory over preseason ASC East division favorite East Texas Baptist Saturday afternoon at Ornelas Gymnasium.

The Lady Jackets (7-0, 4-0) — who shot 52 percent — eclipsed the 80-point mark for the third time in four conference games and the fourth time in the last five games overall. HPU is averaging a conference-best 80.3 points per game, while surrendering just 45 points per outing, also tops in the ASC.

Meia Daniels was one of three Lady Jackets to finish in double figures as she tallied a team-high 20 points. Kim Hoffman added 17 points and Stacey Blalock followed with 13 points.

Also scoring for HPU were Stephanie Brewer and Elaine Hobbs with eight points each, Mionca Hall with six points, Hope Hohertz with five points, Daphnie Pippins with four points and Katy Sarem, Sarah Jockers and Sarah Pfiester chipped in two points apiece.

Dana Alexander led ETBU’s Lady Tigers (2-5, 1-3) — who shot 35 percent — with 14 points. Michelle Young added nine points and Julie Bowman chipped in eight points. Sade’ Stewart, who entered the game averaging a team-high 18.8 points, was held scoreless.

Howard Payne led 48-19 at halftime behind a 57 percent shooting effort during the first 20 minutes. The Lady Jackets held ETBU without a point for the first six minutes of the contest en route to building a 13-point lead.

Hoffman scored five points in the opening run, Brewer added four points and two each came from Hohertz and Blalock.

Following a Young bucket, Hoffman chalked up another two points, Pippins scored following an offensive rebound and Daniels got on the board with a three-pointer that made the score 20-2 with 12:31 left before halftime.

The Lady Jackets’ lead did not exceed 18 points until Sarem sank two free throws with 4:24 left in the half, which gave Howard Payne a 34-14 advantage.

HPU went on to finish the first half on a 16-5 run. A bucket from Brewer with 48 seconds left gave the Lady Jackets their first 30-point cushion, 47-17.

Howard Payne opened the second half with a 13-2 spurt that increased the lead to 40 points, 61-21, with 16:53 remaining. Daniels chalked up five points, Blalock added four points and Brewer and Hohertz also tallied field goals during the run.

Blalock’s bucket with just under 14 minutes remaining capped a 23-4 run to start the second half and also gave Howard Payne its largest lead, 71-23.

The Lady Jackets will play at LeTourneau at 3 p.m. Monday.
