GLEN ROSE — Seeking their first trip to the 7-on-7 state tournament since 2001, the Early Longhorns came up one victory short in the Glen Rose 3A/2A/A state qualifying tournament Saturday.

Early advanced out of its pool, but dropped its semifinal contest to Class 3A West, which earned a berth in the July 10-11 small school 7-on-7 state tournament, along with tournament champion Glen Rose, which defeated Paradise in the other semifinal.

Early’s pool consisted of the Longhorns, 3A schools Lake Worth and Crandall and Class 2A Godley. West emerged from a pool that featured 3A programs Hillsboro and Alvarado, along with 2A Grandview.

Glen Rose got past a trio of 2A schools — Clifton, Palmer and Eastland — while Paradise survived against 3A Whitney, 2A Hico and Class A LaVilla.

Further information on the tournament was unavailable at press time.

Early head coach Robbie Tindol stated earlier in the week that the Longhorns would also compete in the Class 4A/5A state qualifier at Brownwood on June 21, and possibly at Abilene on June 14.

Along with the Longhorns’ appearances in 7-on-7 state qualifying tournaments, both the Early varsity and JV squads are taking part in a 7-on-7 league in Abilene. Early plays its games on Monday nights.
