RICHARDSON - Both Howard Payne soccer teams were kept off the scoreboard Saturday as the UT-Dallas Comets and Lady Comets earned American Southwest Conference victories.
The Lady Jackets were shut out for just the third time this season, and only the second time in ASC action as they fell to UT-Dallas, 4-0. The Yellow Jackets, meanwhile, suffered a 1-0 defeat in the closing minutes.
In the Lady Jackets’ loss, HPU (6-6, 5-3) attempted just three shots on goals with two coming from Kelli Wentworth, while Susana Chavarria tried the other.
Defensively, goal keeper Rachael Hardegree made four saves, but gave up for goals, including two to UT-Dallas (7-3-3, 5-1-1) midfielder Katie Makanani.
Leah Bowyer opened the scoring at 21:42 with the only goal of the first half, thanks to an assist from Kate Gougler.
Evan Jones increased the UT-Dallas lead to 2-0 just 8:43 into the second half on an assist from Bowyer.
Makanani scored her first goal with 16:16 left on Bowyer’s second assist, and the final Lady Comet goal was recorded with 11:12 remaining as Whitney Taylor assisted Makanani.
In the men’s game, UT-Dallas (7-3-2, 5-0-2) tallied the only goal with 2:35 left as Kevin White scored on a header off an assist from Stephen Ambrose.
The Yellow Jackets (4-4-2, 3-4-1) attempted just four shots on goal with Dennis Benitez firing two, while Shane Cazad and Malcolm Wentworth tried one each.
Jacket goalie Francisco Medina finished with five saves.
Howard Payne will be back in action next weekend as it hosts a pair of ASC doubleheaders Friday and Saturday.
Louisiana College will invade Citizens National Bank Field first, then Mississippi College pays a visit. Action both days is slated to start at 1 p.m.
