MASON — The Brownwood varsity team dropped a narrow 11-8 decision to Fredericksburg here on Thursday.
The Lions and Lady Lions got off to a slow start with losses in two of seven doubles matches, but rebounded by splitting the 12 singles matches.
“The score was a great improvement over last year’s 15-4 loss,” said Brownwood head tennis coach Dave Cunha. “This match could have gone either way. We lost four of five very close matches.”
Earning the doubles wins were the mixed team of Ryan Barkley and Claire Faetche (7-5, 6-3), along with the No. 3 girls duo of Kathryn Priddy and Sophia Chaput (6-2, 3-6, 10-5).
“We must improve our doubles play because it is so important to get off to a good start in every match,” Cunha said. “This is definitely something we will be working on in practice.”
Girls singles wins were collected by Joan Burks (6-4, 3-6, 11-9), Andrea Leonard (6-3, 6-4), Julia Arledge (6-2, 6-2) and Priddy (6-4, 6-1).
On the boys sides, Will Thomas (6-1, 4-6, 10-6) and Gabe Cardenas (6-4, 2-6, 10-8) claimed three-set singles victories.
The Lions and Lady Lions are slated to return to action at 4 p.m. Tuesday when they host Abilene Wylie.
