GADSDEN, Ala. — Reckless softball opened the ASA 14-and-under Southern Nationals with a pair of pool play victories here Thursday.
Reckless’ 2-0 record earned the team a 3 p.m. Friday first-round date with the TAA Bobcats. A victory would have ensured a winners’ bracket showdown against either Spring Klein or the Centex Explosion at 11 a.m. today. If Reckless dropped the opener, it was to play an elimination contest at 5 p.m. Friday against the Spring Klein-Centex Explosion loser.
Pool play began with a 3-2 victory for Reckless as it knocked off the host Gadsden Raiders.
Julia Loudermilk led the offense with a 3-for-3 effort that included a pair of RBIs. Carissa Zarate went 2-for-3 and drove in a run while Morgan Birrell, Rynn Norris, Amanda Gober and Kish Suniga had one hit apiece.
In the circle, Kate Atchley worked the first three innings and Daniela Castillo finished the game. The Reckless defense also rebounded after committing a couple of early errors.
Reckless rallied from a four-run deficit in its second game as it scored the final seven runs in an 8-5 victory over the T-Birds of Lilburn, Ga.
Trailing 5-1 after 2 1/2 innings, Birrell ripped a two-run over-the-fence home run that scored herself and Loudermilk and ignited the Reckless offense.
Birrell finished 4-for-4 with her home run, a double, two singles and three RBIs. Atchley went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Shandi Winstead was 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and Loudermilk went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Loudermilk tossed the first four innings before Atchley came on in relief for the final three innings.
Reckless softball, which is based out of Blanket, is comprised of players from Early, Brownwood, Coleman and Comanche.
