Bulletin Staff Report
Howard Payne head football coach Steve Fanara announced Friday that current defensive coordinator Roger Geise will now take on the responsibilities of assistant head football coach.
Geise just completed his third year as the defensive line coach for the Yellow Jackets.
“I am pleased to announce the appointment of Roger Geise to the position of assistant head coach,” Fanara said. “I have a great deal of respect for him and the experience he has brought to the Howard Payne program. He is a guy I have looked to for advice in the past and will continue to do so in the future.”
Geise joined the Yellow Jacket coaching staff in 2005, after a three-year hiatus from coaching, as a part-time staff member.
In December of 2006, Geise became a full-time staff member.
Geise, who will be entering his 35th year of coaching, began his career in his native state of Pennsylvania in 1970. He joined the LSU staff in 1974 as a graduate assistant and served in that position for three years.
Geise entered the high school coaching ranks in Texas in 1977. He coached at numerous schools and served as athletic director and head football coach at Johnson City and Sabine High Schools. He has coached for 25 years in the Texas high school ranks.
Geise earned his B.S. degree from Lock Haven University (PA) where he was a four-year letterwinner. He also holds a M.Ed from LSU.
In 2005, Geise was inducted into the Romanoski Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
“Every head coach needs a guy that is in his corner so to speak,” Fanara said. “Roger is that guy.”
