The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets put Friday’s season opening 54-point loss behind them as they improved to 1-1 with a 73-60 victory over the Southwestern Assemblies of God Tuesday night at the Brownwood Coliseum.

Tom Hermann’s double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds sparked the Yellow Jackets, while Travis Dawson joined him in double figures with 13 points.

Chris Cornwell chipped in eight points, while Daytona Burch added seven points off the bench. John Bryant finished with five points, while Yellow Jackets tallying four points apiece included Lee Scott, Brock Woods, Deandray McDaniel and Bryan Blalock.

Nate Phillips added three points, Gary Thompson contributed two points and Ryan Stone finished with one point.

The Yellow Jackets shot 46 percent (25-of-55) from the floor, while holding SAG to 40 percent (22-of-55) shooting. HPU also won the battles in turnovers (29-26), rebounds (37-35) and free throws converted (18-12).

HPU will be back in action Monday when it hosts Sul Ross at 5 p.m. to open American Southwest Conference action.
