Seven members of the Brownwood Lions football team were selected to the Texas High School Coaches Association Academic All-State football team, which was released Friday.

Lions picked for the first team were senior center/defensive lineman Luke Butler, senior receiver/defensive back Taylor Long and senior utility player Chris Munson.

Landing on the second team were senior linebacker/fullback Chase Holmes and senior receiver/defensive back Collin Seale.

Earning honorable mention were senior receiver/defensive backs Jacob Allen and Garrett Goodwin.

The THSCA Academic All-State teams are selected by a point system that awards points for GPA, class rank and SAT or ACT score. The student-athletes are then placed on teams according to the number of points they have earned.

Criteria required to be nominated is an overall GPA of 92 or above, including grades 9-12 and the first six weeks of grade 12; candidates must also be a member of the team in good standing at the time of nomination; and each candidate must be of good moral character.

The program is in its sixth year and has steadily grown to over 2,000 applicants.
