The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets and Lady Jackets recorded their first soccer victories of the season over the weekend, as both knocked off Wayland Baptist on Friday.
The Yellow Jackets crushed WBU, 5-0, while the Lady Jacket came away with a 2-1 overtime victory.
In the Jackets’ victory, Shane Cazad tallied two goals and two assists, while Dennis Benitez also scored twice.
Cazad scored in the 19th and 47th minutes, while Benitez found the net in the 23rd minute — on an assist from Cazad — and the 64th minute. Cazad’s other assist went to Malcolm Wentworth, who scored in the 54th minute.
Francisco Medina finished with four saves, while Nick Rayburn had one.
For the Lady Jackets, Leslie Jones scored the winning goal in the 108th minute on an assist by Alyssa Biere.
Ta’Kenda Cotton gave HPU a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute, but Wayland Baptist pulled even on Stephanie Coronado’s goal in the 32nd minute.
Kaitlyn Kelm went the distance in goal, tallying seven saves for HPU.
Howard Payne traveled to Eastern New Mexico Saturday, where the Yellow Jackets suffered a narrow 3-2 loss. Information on the Lady Jackets’ game was unavailable at press time.
Cazad and Ben Bishop recorded the HPU goals against ENMU, while Jaime Benitez had an assist.
Cazad opened the scoring at 10:41, but ENMU responded with goals by Mario Alarcon and Emerson Rodrigues. Bishop pulled the Jackets even at 2-all at the 53:48 mark, but ENMU’s Kal Hebert scored the game-winner at 65:23.
Medina went the distance in goal and tallied four saves.
The Lady Jackets (1-2) and Jackets (1-2) will be back in action Tuesday when they host Paul Quinn in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
