Brownwood will be well represented this week as six teams compete in four tournaments with TTAB state championships as their ultimate objective.

A pair of teams will stay close to home as the Camp Bowie Sports Complex will serve as the site of the 10-team TTAB Junior Midgets (8-and-under) state tournament starting Monday.

The Brownwood Cardinals and Brownwood Astros are included in the tournament field, along with the Bosqueville Sidewinders, Malakoff Brewers, Malakoff Marlins, Troup Rattlers, Whitehouse Rangers, Clifton White Sox, Clifton Red Sox and a team from Groesbeck.

Both Brownwood teams received a bye into the state field since Camp Bowie was the site of the tournament. The rest of tournament field is comprised of the champion and runner-up from their respective district tournaments throughout the state.

A coaches’ meeting will be held Sunday to determine the bracket for the Junior Midgets tournament, and a complete tournament schedule will appear in Monday’s edition of the Bulletin.

Two more Brownwood teams will be vying for a state title in Athens as part of the 10-team Junior Boys (15-and-under) tournament. The White Sox won the District 3 championship, while the Rangers earned a spot in the field after coming in second at the district tournament.

The squads from Brownwood will compete against the Athens Rangers, Athens Braves, Alto Astros, Rusk Astros, Hawley Bearcats, Clyde Bulldogs, Mildred Reds and the Mildred American Legion team. Like the Junior Midgets, the champion and runner-up from each district around the state were sent to the state tournament.

Only one team advanced - the district champion - to the Senior Midgets (10-and-under) and Freshman Open Base (12-and under) state tournaments, and Brownwood teams qualified for both of those events.

The Brownwood Dawgs surprised the Brownwood Cardinals, who they had not defeated during the regular season, as they won both head-to-head district tournament meetings and the District 2 championship.

The Dawgs will head to Killeen and be a part of the 14-team state field along the Killeen Tribe, Palmer Longhorns, Pleasant Grove A’s, Lindale Astros, Athens Aggies, Wills Point Phillies, Belton Aggies, Moody Bearcats, Salado Muddogs, Chandler Cardinals,Teague Lions and teams from Meridian and Mexia.

The Brownwood Rangers swept the field at the District 2 tournament in Early to earn their place among the 14 teams competing for a state title in New Boston this week.

Other teams in the field include the Redwater Giants, New Boston Red Sox, Palmer Bulldogs, Bosqueville Longhorns, Pleasant Grove Rockies, Lindale Astros, Athens Marlins, Salado Knights, Belton Mariners, Whitehouse Aces, Rusk Astros and teams from Malakoff and McGregor.
