WACO — The Brownwood varsity tennis team posted a 2-2 record to finish fifth out of eight teams at the Waco tournament, which concluded Saturday.
Brownwood’s victories came against Class 3A Robinson (12-5) and Class 2A Van (11-6). The Lions and Lady Lions lost matches to Class 5A Belton (13-4) and District 16-4A rival Copperas Cove (12-7).
Cove finished second in district last year, which ended Brownwood’s string of regional tournament appearances. Though the Lions and Lady Lions boast young rosters again this season, Brownwood head coach David Cunha stated in a preseason interview that he felt his team would be able to overtake either Cove or Midway in district.
“The match with Cove was very close and could have gone the other way with a couple of wins here and there,” Cunha said. “We also played short-handed on the girls side, which hurt a little
“Overall, this was a good tournament for us. It was a long couple of days but the experience and match play was very beneficial.”
Steven Pinkard led the way with seven wins in four team matches for the Lions, while Luis Vallecillo added five wins and four each came from Will Thomas and Ryan Hembree.
For the Lady Lions, Julia Arledge chalked up five victories and Joan Burks posted four wins.
Brownwood will be back in action at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Abilene High.
