The postseason has arrived, which means it’s time for the Brownwood Lions to give a nod to their football-rich history with the dawning of the seven stars on their uniforms, representing the school’s seven state football championships.

This season, however, the stars will be in a new location.

For years, Brownwood sported jerseys with seven stars on the shoulders. Tonight — when Brownwood (8-2) tangles with the Dalhart Golden Wolves (6-4) in Class 3A Division II, Region I bi-district action at Texas Tech’s Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock — the Lions will debut a new decal on their helmets that incorporates the seven stars.

“We wanted to start fresh and not use any of the old stuff that’s been used here before. We have new jerseys and uniforms this year and we wanted to stick to wearing them,” said Lions first-year head coach Bob Shipley. “Brownwood has worn the jerseys with the seven stars in the playoffs, but we went with the design on the helmet because we wanted to continue to wear the jerseys that we have and not pull out the old ones.”

Shipley stated offensive coordinator Jeff Merket was behind the design of the decal for the helmets.

“Coach Merket designed a logo for the helmets and included the seven stars representing each state championship Brownwood has won,” Shipley said. “We ordered those and put those on the helmets to honor the tradition.”
