The Bangs Dragons avenged a 62-51 loss to Sweetwater in their final game before the holiday break by holding on for a 47-43 win over the 3A Mustangs in Underwood’s Christmas Classic action Monday.
The Dragons (12-4) received a pair of free throws from Braden Williams with five seconds left, then Matt Simons stole the inbounds pass near midcourt two seconds later to secure the four-point win.
Williams and Marcus Smith carried Bangs with 11 points apiece, trailed by eight from D.J. Rios, seven from Clay Brim, five from Grant Bear, three from Simons and two points from Issac Brown.
Chase Sims and Paxton Kelley scored 11 points each to pace the Sweetwater offense.
Trailing 15-12 after one quarter, Bangs outscored Sweetwater 17-6 in the second period to grab a 29-21 halftime lead.
The Dragons started the quarter with a 7-0 run then, after the Mustangs closed to within 21-19, Bangs ended the period with an 8-0 spurt.
Bangs led by as many as 10 points, 36-26, with 3:39 left in the third quarter on a Bear three-pointer.
Sweetwater closed the gap to 42-41 with 3:29 remaining, but Rios answered with a trey at the 3:05 juncture that pushed the Dragons’ advantage out to 45-41.
The Mustangs scored their final points with 2:48 left to trim the deficit to 45-43, but could not complete the rally.
The Dragons will be back in action at 1:30 p.m. against Palestine Westwood and at 6 p.m. against Snyder to round out Classic play.
