COPPERAS COVE — Playing without the complete roster intact, the Brownwood varsity tennis team dropped its first two matches of the fall season to Marble Falls and Harker Heights here Saturday.

The Lions and Lady Lions took Marble Falls to the limit in the first match, falling 10-9. Brownwood had a little tougher time against 5A Harker Heights as it was dealt a 14-5 setback.

“Against Marble Falls, it came down to the very last match and we ended up losing that one in a tiebreaker,” said Brownwood head tennis coach Dave Cunha. “We lost to them by the same score last year, but it was a good match for us to start the year.

“The Harker Heights match was closer than score. Our kids were pretty worn out from the first match and this one was played in extreme heat. It was still good practice for us.”

Against Marble Falls, Brownwood picked up two wins apiece in boys and girls doubles.

Lady Lions freshmen Joan Burks and Julia Arledge collected a 6-2, 6-2 victory, while sophomore Sophia Chaput and freshman Ilse Rincon teamed up for a 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 triumph.

For the Lions, juniors Luis Vallecillo and Steven Pinkard rallied for a 5-7, 6-3, 10-7 victory over Logan Dockerty and Conner Dockerty, while senior Ryan Hembree and sophomore Ryan Barkley won by default.

In boys singles action, victories were claimed by junior Will Thomas (8-2 over Austin Krause), Pinkard (8-3 over Bryant Mandel) and Bubba Vannoy (8-4 over Thomas Griffin).

Earning girls singles wins were Arledge (8-1 over Devon Dockerty) and sophomore Andrea Leonard (8-3 over Erin Burget).

In its match against Harker Heights, four of Brownwood’s five wins came in boys singles competition.

Thomas knocked off Will Truitt, 8-4; Vallecillo disposed of D’Mitri Hobbs, 8-3; Gabe Cardenas handled Miguel Bonero, 8-6; and Barkley took care of Max Easton, 8-6.

The lone victory for the Lady Lions was earned by Burks, who defeated Erin Cullihan, 8-4.

Brownwood (0-2) will return to action on Wednesday, Aug. 22 in a 5 p.m. road match against Granbury.
