BURLESON — The Brownwood Lions and Lady Lions opened their tennis season on the short end of a pair of decisions here Saturday.
Brownwood fell to Class 5A Burleson, 14-5, and dropped a 16-3 match to defending regional tournament qualifier Burkburnett.
In the match against Burleson, Lady Lions Joan Burks (6-1, 6-3 over Chrissy Fernandez) and Stephanie Sanchez (6-4, 7-6 [8-6] over Tori Johnson) collected singles victories.
The doubles teams of Burks and Katherine Priddy (6-2, 6-1 over Fernandez and Brittney Russell) and Sarah Faetche and Emily Harding (default) also picked up wins.
Meanwhile, Claire Faetche and Michael Fuller teamed up in mixed doubles for a 6-1, 6-0 win over Kyle Beckric and Lea Flamming.
Rocky Henry earned a sub-varsity singles win for the Lions, 8-5, over Justin Cloud.
Against Burkburnett, Burks again led the charge with a 6-3, 6-1 singles win over Emily Salas, while the mixed doubles team of Fuller and Faetche also notched their second victory of the day, 6-2, 6-3.
The Lions received their first singles win from Brandon Thompson, who claimed a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Tyler McNew.
Also competing in singles matches for the Lions were Darren Ridley, Andrew Harding, Cody Snyder, Brian Bowen and Fuller. The Lions doubles teams consisted of Ridley and Harding, Thompson and Snyder and Bowen and Raymundo Delgado.
For the Lady Lions, Priddy, Krystal Garcia, Presley Parker, Breanna Parker and Claire Faetche battled in singles matches, while the third doubles team was comprised of Garcia and Becky Kinman.
The Lions and Lady Lions will hold an intrasquad match at 4 p.m. Thursday, then return to live competition on Sept. 5 when they visit San Angelo Lake View and San Angelo Central.
