GATESVILLE — The Brownwood Lady Lions eclipsed the double-digit mark in wins with a pair of come-from-behind victories to open the Gatesville tournament Monday.
The Lady Lions improved to 11-6 on the season by defeating Salado, 50-39, and Wimberley, 48-40. The victories place Brownwood in the championship bracket of the tournament, where the Lady Lions will face an undetermined opponent at 5 p.m.
In the victory over Salado, the Lady Lions trailed 11-4 after one quarter but pulled even at 18-all at halftime. Brownwood then took a 31-29 advantage into the fourth period, where it outscored Salado by a 19-10 count down the stretch.
Patricia Wilson led Brownwood with 24 points and seven steals, followed by seven points and six rebounds from Sara Byrd. Amanda Gober, Kelsey Gober and Trinity Ansons each chipped in four points, while Hannah Mask contributed three points. Tiara Brown and Sydnie Darden added two points each.
As a team, the Lady Lions collected 20 steals and 25 rebounds, with eight coming on the offensive end.
Against Wimberley, Brownwood found itself down 10-4 after one quarter and 22-18 at halftime. But the Lady Lions yielded just 18 second-half points — nine each in the third and fourth periods. Leading 34-31 after three quarters, the Lady Lions outscored Wimberley by five points, 14-9, over the final eight minutes.
Ansons led the charge with 14 points and four rebounds, followed by 13 points from Darden and 10 points, five steals and five rebounds from Wilson. Kelsey Gober chipped in four points, Byrd and Mask each finished with three and Mallorie Maxwell scored one point.
The Lady Lions racked up 26 rebounds, including 14 on the offensive end, and tallied 16 steals.
