A third straight trip to the playoffs and district runner-up finish resulted in eight members of the Brownwood Lady Lions softball team receiving postseason honors from the 16-4A coaches.
Brownwood — which finished 16-16 overall and 8-2 in district — received one superlative award, three first-team all-district selections, a pair of second-team roster spots and two more Lady Lions received honorable mention. District 16-4A champion Midway — which was ranked No. 1 most of the season — led the way with 10 all-district picks, not counting honorable mention selections.
Lady Lion senior right fielder Meagan Sikes was selected as the co-defensive player of the year, along with Midway sophomore Sienna Miller.
In 31 regular season games, Sikes posted a fielding percentage of .818 with just four errors.
Sikes’ most memorable defensive play of the season came in the bottom of the eighth inning of the Lady Lions’ 17-13 nine-inning win at Waco High. Her bullet throw to the plate denied Waco High the game-winning run, then Brownwood scored four runs in the top of the ninth to secure the victory.
Sikes — who received the team’s defensive player of the year award at Monday’s spring sports banquet — also batted .351 with 34 hits, seven doubles, 14 RBIs, 25 runs scored and a team-high 30 stolen bases.
Making the first team for the Lady Lions were senior left fielder Casie Harry, the team’s MVP, senior third baseman Samantha Garcia, the team’s offensive player of the year, and junior pitcher Kaitlin Sliger, who threw every pitch in district for Brownwood.
Harry posted a .369 batting average during the regular season and led the team in hits (38), triples (3), RBIs (21), runs scored (33) and fielding percentage (.972). She was also second on the team in home runs (3) and stolen bases (23).
Garcia hit .262 for the year with 16 base hits, two doubles, a triple, two home runs, 13 RBIs and 16 runs scored. She also finished with a fielding percentage of .918.
Sliger was 16-15 during the regular season with a 4.82 ERA and 137 strikeouts in 186 innings pitched. She also tied Harry for the team lead with 21 RBIs, homered twice and notched four doubles.
Second baseman Kerri Jones and center fielder Jalisa Hall, both sophomores, were the Lady Lions’ second team selections.
Jones hit .376 with 32 hits, four doubles, two triples, a home run, 16 RBIs, 25 runs scored and posted a .906 fielding percentage. Hall led Brownwood with a .459 batting average, drove in 16 runs and scored 16 runs.
Honorable mention choices included shortstop Alex Williams and catcher Vicky McAnear.
Williams collected 16 hits — including a team-high five home runs — 18 RBIs and scored 16 runs. McAnear tallied 28 hits, 14 RBIs, batted .346 and matched Sikes with a team-high seven doubles.
Four superlative awards were earned the Midway Pantherettes, whose season concluded this past weekend with a loss to Midlothian. Midlothian also ousted Brownwood in the regional quarterfinals round in 2005 and 2006.
Midway junior Holly Gentsch was named district MVP, sophomore Lizzy Kelly was voted pitcher of the year, freshman Makenzie Robertson was tabbed co-newcomer of the year and Miller joined Sikes as co-defensive players of the year.
Copperas Cove senior Brittney Spann was chosen as the offensive player of the year, while University freshman Maggie Aguilar shared the newcomer of the year honor with Robertson.
