The Howard Payne Lady Jackets split a pair of weekend American Southwest Conference soccer games as they continue their push to qualify for their first trip to the postseason.

The Lady Jackets knocked off Louisiana College, 3-0, Friday, then fell to Mississippi College, 3-0, on Saturday.

The top six teams advance to the ASC championship tournament, which is hosted by the No. 1 seed. Entering Saturday’s action, the Lady Jackets were one of three teams tied for fourth place, which would qualify them for the postseason.

The Lady Jackets (8-6, 6-4) also have as many conference wins this season as they had total wins in their first two seasons.

In Friday’s victory, Howard Payne took control immediately as Takenda Cotton scored off a Kelli Wentworth assist just 3:47 into the game, then Wentworth tallied an unassisted goal at 8:29.

Cotton added her second goal with 6:56 left before halftime.

Howard Payne took 15 shots compared to the two of Louisiana College (1-11, 1-7) and Allison Gudmundson recorded a pair of saves for the Lady Jackets.

In Saturday’s loss, the Lady Jackets were outshot 19-6.

The Mississippi College (12-3, 7-2) goals were scored by Christa Sutter (17:51), Anna Clark (35:15) and Heather Roberson (84:13).

Rachael Hardegree recorded three saves for HPU, while Gudmundson added one.

Howard Payne will next play at McMurry at 1 p.m. Friday and at Hardin-Simmons at 1 p.m. Saturday.
